Today is a bright day for those who are asking when the game will be launched. Unfortunately, we are not ready to announce an exact date yet. However, we have finished a first alpha version of the game this week, which means that it’s fewer days left for the game to be available on Steam.

For your information, this is the first version of the videogame which will be tested out of our offices by some external agents. Our feeling is as if our tot went to school for first time. Our baby bird is getting older and it will soon fly from its nest to your home. But before this happens, we must test it as much as needed to make the game close to perfection for its market release.

The alpha version we are speaking about is almost including the complete gameplay with the exception of some stages which still must be polished. It is containing 6 different houses, celebrity parties, business summits and console presentations, and many more surprises which we prefer not to unveil. Moreover, with this version you can also manage your own contact network, create your own channel and make it #1, employ collaborators, and build your own content firm.

To be honest with you, these days have been like a hard marathon for the team. We have been suffering long working days to finish the game as soon as possible and we have had the pressure for maintaining our high quality standards. It has been worth it. Graphics, gameplay, music… everything is set so you can have an unbeatable youtuber experience with this game.

We will keep updating this blog with news about the evolution of the game. Stay tuned to our website and social networks. ¡Very little time left to finish the game!

Our starring characters in Youtubers Life —that is to say, you— will have to develop their life in different places. In this new post, we will give full detail of these places.
In this new post, we will give full detail of the settings where the action takes place. Don’t get nervous, we won’t unveil any spoiler.

The main action will be developed in your room at your house. In this place you will have a computer and everything you need to record, upload and publish your videos. You will even have the chance to buy your basic needs —food, games, clothes and other items— directly from your bedroom! Obviously, you will also have a bed where to sleep and charge your batteries. In total there will be 5 different houses where you can live in, each bigger than the previous one… Hold on a sec, were there 5 or 6?

Apart from that, you will be forced to attend your social obligations and enjoy yourself. You are not supposed to record videos all of the time! Youtubers have their own life too and you will have to do like them! You may go to the cinema to watch a movie or you may brefer clubbing all night long. If you are lucky enough, you may even meet your soul mate and get married!

Besides, you will also have to attend presentations in which new products will be shown. In real life these conferences are quite tedious… Will they be boring in the game too? Of course not! Becoming a youtuber is always fun! You can even take a selfie in the photocall like celebs do!

You will also have the opportunity to increase your popularity among other professionals if you attend summits. There will be local, national and international summits. Pull yourself together, if you meet a celebrity, he or she may invite you to a private party. They say that parties set by nouveau riche are unbeatable.

Don’t miss more news in future posts. Each week before the launchdate we will be providing information about the game. You will soon experience a Youtubers Life!

There are a lot of fans who have made some questions about the new upcoming hit of U-Play Online —Youtubers Life. As follows, you will see the most frequently asked questions about its gameplay:
Q: Little time left for the launch of Youtubers Life. Can you confirm the official launch date?
A: The game is under the last phase of development and we will soon be able announce the exact launching date. Youtubers Life is our most ambitious project and we want to put the final touches to the game to make an incredible experience not only for YouTube fans but for every videogame lover too.

Q: Will you be able to emulate PewDiePie or Michelle Phan in the game?
A: Both of them! There will be up to 5 different videoblogging categories: gaming, music, fashion, cuisine and lifestyle. Each category will have its own mechanics and you will have to turn yourself into an expert in that field to become successful. Besides, if you want to look like one of your idols in particular, there are many character building elements to mix so you can create your preferred avatar. If you want to, you can physically look like a famous star for sure!

Q: What’s the aim of the game?
A: The aim is determined by the player in a story which is continuosly adapted to his or her actions. Obviously, hardcore gamers will want to live in the biggest house of all, they will pursue mastering every videoblogging genre, and they will seek the highest income. You will be able to do all of that. However, other players may enjoy moderated virtual life conditions, keeping a faithful fan community or becoming a guru in a subject in particular. As we have said at the beginning, the goal we have drawn is to capture the experience of being a Youtuber and we believe that this is the real aim of the game, from the tough beginning of the career as a videoblogger, to the peak of their popularity.

Q: What are differences between the development of this game and other titles you have made in the past?
A: In spite of the fact that we have always been exaggerately self-demanding, in this case we have found an amazing challenge. The amount of workers who have taken part in Youtubers Life is significantly higher than with any other previous game productions. Actually, although this is not our longest development in terms of time investment, we have been making this game for more than a year so far, which is quite a lot. We have spent a lot of time locked up in the office and we are terribly excited about showing the game to everybody. We are conscious that we have something big in our hands which will be buzzed in the gaming market more than previous titles. For these reasons, our feelings and our enthusiasm are special.

Q: Is there a surprise within the game you can share?
A: We have been visited by some very popular characters because they want to have a cameo role in our game. Apart from that, gossip says that there’s a ghost in the game but we don’t now where you can find it.

We want Youtubers Life to be a game for all ages and this is something we also had to take into consideration when deciding its visual looks.
In this case, our main influences come from Game Dev Tycoon and The Sims, titles which have also been principal references in our game design.

At the beginning we wondered whether to make a game under an isometric perspective -in 2.5D, that is to say, creating stages in 3D, in spite of the fact that in the game you played with an image in 2D. However, we finally decided to use pure 3D because we thought that it could look more spectacular and add a differentiation with regard to other tycoon games. We also ended up by exaggerating the focal length, which in principle had to be close to the orthographic one, in order to strengthen the 3D perception.

We want Youtubers Life to be a game for all ages and this is something we also had to take into consideration when deciding its visual looks. We thought that rather than realism, our models -both characters and objects- should have funny proportions and a bright colour palette, as in cartoons -actually, we use to call it cartoonish style.

A technical requirement we had to consider from the beginning was the fact that we needed a huge amount of non playable characters (NPC’s). This forced us to find a way which generating a character should be as easy as possible and did not damage the performance of the game in a computer. Our characters are formed by different pieces which can combine between each other, just as a character from Lego. At the same time, we generate a high number of NPC’s and we offer this variety to the players so they can create their avatar at their convenience.

We also thought that it was important that our character had facial animation in order to express feelings. The issue was that the camera would stick quite far away from the characters. For this reason we chose a typical 2D technical solution: eyes and mouths are drawings which change frame by frame so it gives an illusion of movement.

Last but not least, as follows you will see how our characters have evolved from a primary phase of the project to nowadays, when the product is almost ready.

It was just a matter of time that both concepts -“youtuber” and “management”- came together in our imagination and that Youtubers Life came to life.

How did we get the idea

U-Play Online was born to develop the whole founding team’s dreamt game. This game was Striker Manager, a football manager browser-game which was, actually, the only game made by our company for quite a long period of time. Some years later we developed its twin game based on basketball. Our reason of being as a company were management games. Both games were very successful in our origin country and they reached high levels of popularity.

Over time, new opportunities arose and we created a new line of games for smartphones. These games were a big challenge for a small sized company like ours by then. Train Crisis, Striker Soccer or Swipe Basketball have been huge successful stories which have carried international recognition. There have been more than 50M downloads overall.

Our first approach to the world of youtubers came with Karmarun, a game developed along with the top Spanish speaking videobloggers Elrubius, Vegeta777 and Willyrex, among others. The strength of these new stars in the media was made clear on the same day we launched our game. We crushed the records of 8 years of life.

From then on, it was just a matter of time that both concepts -“youtuber” and “management”- came together in our imagination and that Youtubers Life came to life.

New platforms

It was obvious that this game would become something big and that we should spare no expense in capturing our ideas within the game. We decided to go back to the desktop format, but this time under the umbrella of Steam rather than making a browser-based game.

The technical features of a PC for these kinds of project were optimal to overcome the limitations of other platforms such as browsers or smartphomes.

References

Immediately after, the sucessful Game Dev Tycoon appeared as a reference. This flawlessly developed game puts the player in the role of a videogame programmer and, in spite of its graphical limitations, its mechanics achieve an extraordinary game depth. However, it is a managing game with no excessive complications.

Another big reference we have come across is The Sims, at the time an extremely innovative franchise which has been able to create a genre of its own. One thing which videobloggers have mentioned with no exception is their complexity of managing their life as a youtuber and their daily ordinary life. We wanted to capture this dichotomy by adding mechanics inspired in the way life is managed in The Sims.

Expectations

Youtubers Life is the most ambitious project made by U-Play Online so far. We have spared no expense in any sense: each mechanics of the game has been iterated several times for a perfect optimization; various artists and animators have taken part in it and have provided the game of its own personality and the characters of their own life; and our developers have had a huge challenge to make dozens of characters behave as if they were real.

Despite the fact that we are conscious of the challenge and the expectations created on this game, Youtubers Life will by our first entry on Steam and we want to do it through the main gate, as we did with Striker Manager when we began making browser games or as we did with Train Crisis when we began making games for smartphones.

Welcome to our development blog!

In our first entry we would like to introduce Youtubers Life and give some rough outlines about our game.

Youtubers Life is a game mixing two genres, life simulation and tycoon, in which the player can develop his career as a youtuber. Players can customize their avatar with hundreds of aesthetic elements, assign a personality and choose a topic for their channel. The aim is to manage this channel, supply viral videos and have as many views as possible so income is generated.

We have inspired ourselves in games such as The Sims or Game Dev Tycoon, apart from the fact that we have got the collaboration of famous youtubers to immerse ourselves in this sub-culture. Taking care of the basic needs of your youtuber and interacting with other youtubers or with your subscribers, is as important as improving your skills, deciding the video you want to create or facing different situations that may occur.

Many popular youtubers began their career being unknown young buds, so we believed that in Youtubers Life you should also put yourself in the shoes of a girl or a boy who lived with her or his parents and who had to combine his teenage daily life obligations. At the beginning, you will have to study at school and get good marks so your mum doesn’t get mad at you. Eventually, when you start being famous and earn money, you will move to your own apartment and focus on creating videos and collaborating with other youtubers.

We hope that you have enjoyed our first post. In the following weeks we will go in depth in many other aspects of the videogame.

Thank you and see you soon!
